Making of -White House Down- 2013































One of the first things I modelled on the show WHD was parts of a Abrams tank. Production had purchased a generic tank model and we had to modify it to match the type of tank that was used in the film. These were the extra modified pieces of geo I made to make our CG tank match the live action tank.







Modelling, UV layout and texturing of the White House Gates. For this I made one section of the model that was created to be easily duplicated and snapped in 3D to create a longer gate. When it came to texturing the color map, it was the same for each piece but when it came to the dirt textures I re-imported the longer duplicated asset and painted unique dirt to avoid any look of repetitiveness.

The images above show how this shot came together. A digital Matt Painting was done for the background, I then used this as a plate in 3D and re-created in Maya the buildings in a 3D environment. Once this was lined up perfectly we sent the model over to Comp who would re-project the Matt Painting onto the geometry to create essentially a 3D background Matt Painting, which works well for cameras with not too much movement.





I worked on various elements of this shot as a Texture Artist. Mainly lots of vehicles.

Our reference images for this show were very, very, poor, blury, not enough angles, were common problems for us. One example I had to create a "Weca News" Van, but as this was the best reference I had from set, I ended up recreating the logo from scratch in Photoshop.








This was the bad guys SUV vehicle, and I was tasked with creating textures for this main hero asset. Painted in Mari, and Photoshop.  Full turntable and shots can be seen on my latest show reel.

Here I painted damaged columns for the front of the White House. Painted in Mari.








The only character work I got to do in the show was this guy, and the best reference I had for this guy was a screen capture of a low res sequence with watermarks all over it, not the ideal! Anyway I painted him in Mari from scratch and was pretty happy how he turned out. In the end he had color, spec, normal maps and was only seen on the back of the bad guys SUV car chasing the limo.
